I have to admit, I have no idea how they will sustain themselves if they ever release the simulator code source. Maybe charging for connections to the grid?
Heiko, note that Linden Lab never promised to release the central server's source code... so yes, it'll be fun to have your own sim hosted at home — with zero content and just you and a handful of friends able to work on it :)
Companies and universities, however, will benefit a lot from the open source simulator code...
And obviously, if they wish to interconnect to the Linden Grid... they'll have to pay for the privilege :)
