Album sales in 3rd year of decline
This is a bit tangential to my usual fare.
Total album sales in 2007 declined 15% — the third consecutive year in decline. The music industry cites piracy and the Internet for the declines. I'm surprised global terrorism didn't make the list, but I think that might be listed among the industry's assets.
However, just a wee thought, I haven't bought a music CD in years. Quite a long time. No, I'm not downloading them online and listening to them. There's just not really anything coming out that I want enough to spend the money on.
Dear Music Industry,
Please make some music that I'd actually enjoy listening to, and I'll actually spend money on it. If, on the other hand, I find out that your decline in sales is because you are restricting supply again then we shall have words, make no mistake. You have done this before in order to cry poor, and it wasn't right.
Thanks muchly,
Tat
PS: I'm not kidding. Make something I'd enjoy listening to. It's been a long time.
Lets see, I think I bought an Enya Cd in the last 10 years, yes that would be about it really.
ReplyDeleteI haven't bought a CD in about a year.
ReplyDeleteIt's not how I listen to music. Instead, I have a paid account at Live365. Later this year I want to get a Windows Mobile smartphone and listen to Live365 in my car. :)
A big A-MEN to that statement! The only music I've bought recently is the new Nightwish album, which is heinously awesome, and I'm going to be seeing their concert tour when it swings by here in May. (Most of the music I've been listening to recently is from overseas. Coincidence? I think not...)
ReplyDeleteOh, I have bought music and payed for music quite a lot recently - actually it's on the up again for me. I pay regularily for music at SL life events. I bought a few albums from SL musicians. I found tons of fun stuff at magnatune.com and jamendo.com. I bought albums from bands I heard life in RL. It just happens that I don't see much reasons to buy stuff from the big labels (I did buy some things - far too many of them being oldish stuff I just wanted to have to complete my library).
ReplyDeleteI've purchased a few CD's, but they were all SL artists. It seems that unsigned artists have more of a personal relationship with me than the big music companies bands. I usually buy them in direct relationship to actually supporting them. With a big music company and signed artists, is my record sale really making a difference? Do the musicians personally know me? I think not. I don't download or steal any of there music. They pretty much give it away on the radio anyway. Talking about radio, I don't listen to that much either. There are podcasts these days that I listen to - again with unsigned artists. Don't get me into the whole TV thing either. Bah!
ReplyDeleteLast time I bought a cd was 5 years ago, lately my music been by the radio or by a paid streaming music service.
ReplyDeleteA bit of an update - I *did* just buy a CD. The Models collection (copyright 1993).
ReplyDeleteNot exactly new music.
these may be some of the mosts idiotic comments I have ever read. I can think of hundreds CDs that I either have recently bought, or still would like to get. Radiohead, Panda Bear, Iron and Wine, Vampire Weekend, The Kills, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear... holy shit I could go on all day. if you guys cant find any music worth paying money for, you aren't looking hard enough. PEACE.
