Methodology

Mixed reality sites in this headcount are selected for their prominence, either from publicity or real world name recognition. Sites with consistent low traffic (500 or less weekly) may be dropped in future Headcounts in favor of other sites. We do not count sites with camping chairs, or visitors in the orientation sims, as there seems to be little evidence to suggest that they will become visitors to the parent site - and if they do, we catch them when we headcount the site anyway.

We collect data four times per day for each site at 2am, 8am, 2pm and 8pm (times in SLT/US Pacific) plus/minus 1 hour. For each sample we count the number of people at the site at the time. We average those samples across the week, and then assume that average to hold constant, with each visitor spending a half hour on-site. This methodology does not necessarily include one-time events that generate high traffic missed by our sampling, which we'll make note of whenever possible. Headcounts do not factor in returning visitors, so assume that the total number of unique Residents are likely to be significantly less than the estimated total visits.

Wishes

I wish the grid wasn't too messed up for me to be able to do any work.

Really. It was too messed up when I went to sleep, and it's still all messed up.

Blogging notes

Welcome the talented Katharine Berry to the blogroll. You'll want to keep an eye on her. It'll be ever so much safer that way :)

Seriously, she's got the right kind of drive and ingenuity. She'll go far.

Also Mygdala March - if you haven't experienced Myg, you should. Grab a bowl. She's a tasty serve.

Wyn Galbraith has just started her blog, Second Wynd, and I'm going to take a moment to encourage you to visit and help her write more, and to remind you of something you already know.

Bloggers love comments. Hey, I keep forgetting to make any myself, what with the jetsetting lifestyle and all - and I'm betting a lot of you see a really cool entry somewhere on one of these blogs and don't think to say anything.

Visit these people. Read their stuff. Leave at least the occasional note. Page-views are page-views; they show that people are reading. Comments... comments show people are caring.

Look through the blogroll, go do some reading, and show some people that you care. I know you do - but they don't, necessarily.

Chart changes

I've changed the total signups chart, the signups-per-day chart and the active residents (last 60 days) charts to show only the last 6 months (actually 182 days) for better resolution and more interesting viewing. I still have all the historical data on file. Charts are here, as usual.

Comic - I know a guy...

* Geek footnote: IETF is the Internet Engineering Task Force. They're the folks that make the Internet work and evolve, as opposed to ICANN who just wish they did.
* As for Vince Fuller, look him up. He's the one from Cisco, not the dead lawyer or the football player.
